History of Carpet

It is the natural characteristics of the human beings that they want to see their residence neat, clean and beautiful. That is why attempts of having the residence beautiful have been made in every age. Carpet is used to cover the floor of the rooms and drawing rooms as well. There is an evidence of existence of carpet before 2500 BC. It was a hand woven carpet and on the tomb of Beni Hassan, Egypt, c.2500 BC. People of the turkey bring it to the Europe and it was only used to cover the table. Carpet history of South Asia is very old and rich of civilization facts, art and great craftsmanship. Carpets of Indo-Pak are very famous in allover the world, since then. With the passage of time, carpet got popularity in the whole world.

In the United States, the carpet industry was started in 1791, when William Sprague started the first woven carpet mill in Philadelphia. Then some other carpet mills opened during the early 1800s in the New England. The power loom with Jacquard mechanism was developed in 1849. In 1878, four Shuttleworth brothers brought 14 looms from England and established their manufacturing plant in Amsterdam, New York. Alexander Smith began his carpet manufacturing plant in 1845 in West Farms, New York. An American, Halcyon Skinner, perfected the power loom for making Royal Axminster in 1876. Carpets are now widely used in allover the world for many purposes. Carpets offer variety of uses for homes, offices, vehicles and other places.
